ORIANNA'S BEREVEMENT GOWN

FITS 1-3 POUND ANGEL BABY

MATERIALS NEEDED:
BABY YARN
RIBBON

CH-CHAIN
SL ST- SLIP STITCH
YO-YARN OVER
SC-SINGLE CROCHET
HDC-HALF DOUBLE CROCHET
DC-DOUBLE CROCHET
V-STITCH ( DC,CH1,DC IN SAME STITCH)

NO GAUGE IS NEEDED BECAUSE THIS PATTERN IS VERY FORGIVING. I LEAVE ALL MY GOWNS OPEN IN THE BACK SO THE ANGEL BABIES CAN BE DRESSED EASILY. IF YOU FIND ANY PROBLEMS PLEASE LET ME KNOW BECAUSE THIS PATTERN HAS NOT BEEN TESTED, AND I'M REALLY NOT THAT GREAT AT WRITING PATTERNS.

ROW 1: CH 32. DC IN 3RD CH FROM HOOK. DC IN NEXT 3 CH'S. (DC, CH1, DC) IN NEXT CH. (V-STITCH MADE) *DC IN NEXT 6 CH'S, V-STITCH IN NEXT CH.* REPEAT FROM *TO* 2 MORE TIMES. DC IN LAST 4 CH. CH 2 TURN.

ROWS 2-6: *HDC IN EACH DC AND WORK V-STITCH IN EACH CH 1 SPACE.* REPEAT FROM * TO * 3 MORE TIMES, HDC IN REMAINING DC. CH2 TURN

THIS NEXT ROW FORMS THE SLEEVES.

ROW7: HDC IN EACH ST TO CH1 SP. (*YO INSERT HOOK IN CH1 SP AND IN NEXT CH1 SP. YO PULL OUT OF BOTH CH1 SPACES YO AND PULL OFF ALL 3 LOOPS.*) HDC IN EACH ST TO NEXT CH1 SP. REPEAT FROM *TO*. HDC IN REMAINING STS. CH2 TURN.

ROW 8: DC IN IN SAME SP AS CH2. WORK 2 DC IN EACH ST AROUND. CH2 TURN.

ROW 9 -25 : DC IN EACH DC ACROSS CH2 TURN.

ROW 26- DC IN EACH DC ACROSS. CH1 TURN.

RUFFLE

ROW 27: SC IN TURNING CH1 SPACE . *CH3 SKIP NEXT ST SC IN NEXT ST. * REPEAT FROM *TO* ACROSS.CH1 TURN

ROW28-31:SC IN SAME SP AS CH1. *CH3 SC IN CH3 SP.*REPEAT FROM *TO* ACROSS. ENDING WITH SC IN LAST SC. DON'T TURN.

CH1 SC IN CORNER WORK SC EVENLY UP EDGE OF GOWN. WHEN YOU GET TO THE NECK SC IN THE CORNER DC. CH3 *SC IN BETWEEN NEXT DC CH3* REPEAT ACROSS. WORK SC EVENLY DOWN THE OTHER SIDE. FINISH OFF AND WEAVE IN ALL ENDS.

SLEEVES: ROW 1: ATTACH YARN AT BOTTOM OF SLEEVE. CH3 , DC IN EACH HDC AROUND. JOIN WITH SL ST TO THE TOP OF THE CH2. CH1

ROW 2: SC IN TURNING CH 1 * CH3 SC IN DC.* REPEAT AROUND FROM * TO *. SL ST TO BEGINNING SC FINISH OFF WEAVE IN ENDS.

REPEAT ROWS 1-2 ON NEXT SLEEVE

WEAVE RIBBON AROUND 1ST ROW OF DC AROUND NECK AND LEAVE ENOUGH IN BACK TO TIE. THIS WILL ALSO HELP TIGHTEN UP THE NECK IF NEEDED.

WEAVE A PIECE OF RIBBON AROUND 1ST ROW OF RUFFLE ON EACH SLEEVE TIE INTO A BOW. THIS MAKES THE SLEEVE FIT BETTER.

I LIKE TO TIE TWO PIECES OF RIBBON (AND MAKE A BOW) ON EACH SIDE OF THE BOTTOM ROW OF DC. I ALSO LIKE TO PUT A BOW ON TOP OF RUFFLE.

  1. My goodness, Kathy, that little gown is beautiful. I'm assuming you've probably made many of these? About how long do they take? I'm not sure I could tackle something quite that fancy right now, but I'll refer back to your email to see what else might be needed. You do beautiful work, by the way! - Keri

  4. Thank you for this pattern.

In 2010 my daughter gave birth to boy/girl twins at 28 weeks. My granddaughter Braelynn passed away the next day. She was dressed in a donated gown which was sewn. I can not tell you how beautiful she looked and how much it meant to us to have her dressed so beautifully. She looked like the angel she was when we walked into the room.

I do not have time to sew but I crochet preemie hats and casket blankets on my train commute to work. I also belong to the online Yahoo group, All Crafts fro Charity, which is how I found your site.

  7. Thank you for sharing. Encourage as many people as possible to make these. In 1962 I had twin girls. 3 mos. early. Only one survived. I had crocheted a fancy dress, bonnet, & booties for what I was TOLD was going to be just ONE baby. Back then they kept moms in hospital for over a week, so I missed the funeral. I told my Mother-in-law to bury the baby in that outfit. Five years ago, after MeMaw died, I helped clean out her house, and I found the little outfit still in the box! It really tore me up to find out my precious Angel was buried in a hospital baby blanket!
This started me to making baby burial outfits. I give them to the newborn nurseries. I had started GIVING them to the funeral homes for FREE, only to find out later they were CHARGING the families for $50.00!!
So now I give to the hospital and from direct contact by family members. I cannot undo what happened all those years ago, but I can prevent it from happening again to those I can reach out to today! Every baby deserves to be buried in something pretty and made just for them! Get your needles and hooks out ladies, we have a giant mission, but it IS something we CAN do to help all those families!
